There are many simple ways to take when planning, developing or improving your website. There are several different steps you should consider when building and improving your site in order to avoid making mistakes that could waste you a lump sum of time, money and effort. Search engine optimization can only be effective if the website is sound. Accomplishing this alone is quite tasking so it is suggested that you avail of the services of a professional because it takes much more than a knack for website construction to avoid key mistakes which could lead to your websites downfall and company’s online demise.

Search engine optimization can increase your ranking on search lists and therefore increase traffic to your website. This increases the chances for potential sales but not having a sound website when users do visit would defeat the purpose of having an increase in hits as a poorly constructed website would turn away these potential clients. The most important page in a company website would be its home page. The landing or home page has to be user friendly, have a welcoming, clean and clear design which is appropriate to the content of the page which directly reflects the purpose, product or service in which the website is all about.

The title of the web page is not present in the actual page and is located in the browser bar and helps in search engine optimization. It would be ideal to have a simple title that starts with the name of the company or product first and then its description. Avoid starting your website title with the word “The” unless you want to be categorized in the “T’s” and keeping it simple attracts customers who usually bookmark these. This is a simple method that is seldom thought of by private individuals and companies during website planning in which professionals are aware of and can drastically improve the chances of launching a SEO website.

Website design service provided by specialists that address these concerns in website design and Search engine optimization. Search engine optimization helps in bring your website to the attention of searchers, retaining the interest of users relies on the design and relevant content featured at the site. There should be enough information to enlighten a user and answer all their queries. The text should be brief and precise but have enough content to incorporate your key words for search engine optimization.

Website is an online identity of a business. Your website represents your business on cyber world. The corporate world is very competitive these days. You have to have an impressive website which could present you on web world. Always remember that just having online presence is not enough in today’s demanding world, you have to have an impressive online presence. By that I mean a website which is attractive in its “look and feel” and also optimized enough to make a mark on famous search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

A professional web designer is the one who makes the website attractive and search engine optimization oriented. Nowadays web designers have lots and lots of projects which they handle at the same time. This article will explain how a web designer can handle the pressure of loads of work and also how can he be effective?

Web designers are always worried with the fact that if they are going to have more projects, how would they maintain the quality? Simply as you grow in your career, you have to learn the art to become specialist and handle the pressure and yet be effective and efficient. “Hard work” is something which can lead the way. Other than hard work there are several things web designers can have.

Latest equipment and software

Without latest equipment and software web designers can’t be effective at all. Make sure your computer, phone, software everything runs smoothly. Imagine if you have to spend time every now and then to set the equipment, how would you be able to focus on designing work?

Knowing your software

A command over your software is the key. If you yourself don’t have command over the software you are using for the designing work, you would never be able to do the job efficiently and effectively. One can watch tutorials and read magazines to have command over software.

Avoid social media when working

Social media is a great way of socializing but at work it can become a hurdle. Imagine you are working on web design and with every minute there is a new notification on your Facebook account which diverts your attention. You response to those notifications as well. This way you would never be able to be focused. A study shows that social media networks consume approximately 25% of the time of an average user.

Take breaks and holidays to reenergize

Continuous work can make you a victim of RSI (repetitive strain injury). Web design services have lots and lots of work these days which have to be done through their web designers. It is always a good idea to give them breaks in their work hours and holidays so that they could reenergize. Regular breaks have direct affect on efficiency levels.

Think

Yes! Web deigning is an innovative and creative job. Sometimes due to more work web designers don’t think. It is recommended that they should take some time and “think” that how can they be more creative, for that matter they should rather think out of the box.

Don’t get disturbed at work hours

Particularly for web designing, if a web designer is being disturbed by different things, he would never be able to deliver what is required by clients.

Web designing and web developing are very intense jobs. A web developer and designer cannot deliver until or unless they don’t have knowledge of “

Client’s business theme.

Identification of target market.

Identification of target audience.

As it is mentioned earlier that web designer’s job is not only to design the website but to make the web site SEO oriented.

1. Always close your HTML tags

When you type an opening HTML tag (e.g. ,
), always place the corresponding closing tag at the end. For example:

* My favourite animals are horses and elephants.
*
My favourite animals are horses and elephants.

*
My favourite animals are horses and elephants.

This will ensure that your HTML pages work properly on all browsers, and will help to prevent any strange problems occurring in your pages! This is especially important with tags such as
, ,
,
and
.

Some tags don’t have a corresponding closing tag – just use these tags on their own. Examples include:

* The
tag, for creating line breaks
* The tag, for inserting images

With XHTML markup, you even have to close tags like br and img. You can do this in a short-hand way by placing a “/” before the closing angle bracket (”>”) – for example,
and <img … />. Find out more about XHTML in our XHTML tutorials.
2. Style HTML using style sheets wherever possible

Style sheets will make your HTML coding life so much easier. No more tags everywhere! You also get much finer control over the way your pages look, and you can change their appearance just by editing one style sheet file.

If you haven’t worked with style sheets yet, pop over to our CSS tutorials to get going!
3. Use an HTML validator

It’s a great idea to run your Web pages through an HTML validator before you publish them on your Web site. These programs will pick up potential problems such as missing closing tags on tables, and using tags that won’t work properly on all browsers. Don’t forget – just because your page looks great in the browser you’re viewing it with doesn’t mean it will work on other browsers!

HTML validators are also a good way to learn about the correct way to use HTML tags – you can learn from your mistakes!

Some good free validators on the Web include the W3C Markup Validation Service and the WDG HTML Validator. Many modern web authoring packages have built-in HTML checkers too.
4. Use HTML comments wisely

To make your HTML code clearer for you (and for others), you can add comments to your code. These are snippets of code that are ignored by Web browsers, so they’re useful for adding short notes and reminders within the code:

<!– Navigation area: Highlight a menu item with the “hi” class –>

Home

About

Learn how to write and use comments in our HTML Comments tutorial.
5. Embedding images in HTML

Pointing correctly to images using the tag is a common stumbling block for beginners. Often your Web page will look great on your desktop PC, but when you upload the page to your site, all the images are broken!

The problem isn’t helped by some web page editors, which incorrectly place “file://” image URLs instead of using relative URLs!

Follow these simple rules to make sure your HTML images appear correctly every time.
A) If possible, use relative URLs

Relative URLs are usually the best to use because they will work wherever the page and images are located, provided they’re always in the same place relative to each other. For example, if the image is in the same folder as the Web page, use:

If the image is in an images folder at the same level as the Web page, use:

If the image is in an images folder at a level above the Web page, use:

B) Alternatively, use URLs relative to the document root

If you have all your images in an images folder in the top level of your site (the document root or web root), you can reference images like this:

This has the advantage that you can move your Web page anywhere within your site, and the images will still display, provided you keep the images in this global images folder.

The disadvantage of this approach is that it will only work when your Web pages are being displayed via a Web server (using http://), not when viewed directly from your hard drive (using file://).
C) Do not use absolute URLs!

If at all possible, avoid using absolute URLs within your site. An absolute URL is a URL that begins with http:// or file://. In particular, if the Web page on your hard drive contains an image URL like this:

it will not work when you upload it to your Web server, as the img tag is directly referencing the file on your hard drive! Change the link to a relative link such as:

or maybe:

as described in Rule A above.

You can find more information on images in Web pages by reading our HTML Images tutorial!
6. Use widths and heights with HTML images

It’s a good idea to specify the width and height of an image when using an tag. For example:

The advantage of doing this is that the Web browser can format the page more quickly as it is loaded, as it knows how to lay out the images before they’ve been downloaded. This means that your visitors can start surfing your page without having to wait for all the images to display!

Most graphics packages (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc) allow you to view the width and height of an image (in pixels) so that you can slot the values into the tag. You can also right-click on the image and select Properties (in Internet Explorer) or view the image in a window on its own and read the width and height in the title bar (in most other browsers).
7. Non-breaking spaces in HTML

Sometimes you want to keep certain words together so that they’re not split over two lines. The way to do this is with a non-breaking space. In HTML the markup for a non-breaking space looks like this:

For example, the following words will wrap if they fall at the end of a line:

The quick brown fox

while this example, which uses a non-breaking space, will keep the words “brown” and “fox” together even if they fall at the end of a line:

The quick brown fox

8. Use tables for tabular data, CSS for layout

Tables have traditionally been used to lay out content on the page; however this was never their intended use. They’re really meant to be used for displaying tabular data (such as data from a spreadsheet, for example).
With the positioning capabilities of CSS, you can build HTML pages that just contain the page content, and use a separate style sheet to lay the content out. Although it has a steeper learning curve than tables-based layouts, CSS positioning is well worth learning as your resulting sites will be faster-loading, easier to maintain and more accessible.

CSS positioning can also do a lot of cool tricks that are very hard with tables, and you can also change the entire look of your site just by changing your style sheet (a great example of this is CSS Zen Garden).

If you’re new to CSS, check out our CSS articles.
9. Creating empty table cells

Sometimes you’ll want to create table cells (
s) with nothing in them; for example, when a particular row doesn’t have any data for one of its columns. Usually, the best way to create an empty table cell is with a non-breaking space, as follows:

Don’t just use

as this will cause your tables to appear rather strange on some browsers!

Find out more about tables in our HTML Tables tutorial.
10. The spacer GIF trick

For really precise control over page layout, and if you haven’t yet got the hang of CSS positioning, you can’t beat the old spacer GIF trick. This involves using a 1 pixel x 1 pixel transparent GIF, which will be invisible in your Web pages, and using the width and height attributes to control the precise padding between page elements such as images, text and table cells. For example, the code:

will create a 10-pixel horizontal gap between the two images, one.gif and two.gif.

You can use spacer GIFs in table cells to “pad out” the table cell and make sure it doesn’t shrink below a certain width or height. In this code example:

the table cell will always be at least 20 pixels high.

I always find it to be easier when there are some good guidelines to follow to feel free to give me some tips.
Anyway, designing websites isn’t what I primarily intended to be about but then then I realized that running websites will be a lot easier if I master the design.
Like the Chinese saying goes, give the man a fish, you fed him for one night, teach him to fish, you fed him for his entire life.

Anyway, first of all, what programs are most useful? I’m guessing Adobe Flash and Photoshop are a must. Dreamweaver as well? What exactly is the difference between Dreamweaver and Fireworks? What does Illustrator do?
Also, how important exactly is coding? I know it might sound like a stupid question since it’s clearly very important but what I wanna know is how far can you get without really knowing it like the back of your hand? I understand there are a lot WYSIWYG applications these days so I figured, maybe, I will be able to do a thing or two without the great knowledge of it.

Any good online tutorials? I’ve stumbled upon some. I especially like video tutorials.

The first, and most important rules I learnt when I first started designing a web site is:

1) Set your page to standards-compliant mode, otherwise it won’t display correctly in IE. This may seem obvious, but unfortunately I learnt this rule first time the hard way.

2) Never design a website using IE as a standard – as of IE 7, Microsoft’s browser did not conform entirely to web standards. Make sure your design appears correctly in Firefox, Opera or Safari first, as these are more web standards-friendly, and then you can apply fixes afterwards to take care of IE (Google “IERoot” for some advice on tweaking for IE)

A graphics package if you are wanting to design anything (e.g. Photoshop)
Flash if you want to make animations (IMO its not a must)
Dreamweaver is a WYSIWYG site creator, so if you want to create websites badly you could use that I guess.
Fireworks is a graphics package, not sure why your compairing it to dreamweaver.
Illustrator is a vector graphics package.

IMO coding is really important, but i’m a programmer so I guess thats kind of an expected answer from me. You can get along okay with knowing your way around WYSIWYG programs pretty well, but it’s always better to have something hand coded IMO.

There are loads of tutorials out there on pretty much everything you asked about, I could list a whole load, but that would take me a lot of time and I have other things to be doing, so it’s not going to happen.

Those are some useful tips for web designers , hope that it will help you :
10 - Try to avoid using flash and rich-media content to present your information. Search Engines cannot read through video clips, pictures or flash banners.

9 - The website belongs to your client, so take the time and visualize what he wants rather than what you want to give him. Your job is to turn his dream into a reality, not make him accept your dream!

8 - Cross-browser compatiblity is a must. If you’re serious about your craft, you need to take the time to test your creations in different browsers. Just because you’re using Firefox, it doesn’t mean everyone is. Also, always validate your code! http://validator.w3.org is a very good start.

7 - Most people read from left to right. Put your important information to the left of the site.

6 - Stick to a color theme. Take your time and analyze color swatches and see which colors match which don’t.

5 - Yes, SEO is important, but think of who the website is aimed at. Your users! Many people overdo keyword injection into their content to drive up their rankings forgetting the fact that it’s the users who are READING your site not search engines. SE’s are just crawling it.

4 - Give relevant information to the topic at hand. Don’t confuse users with a bunch of topics all at once. Make your content structured and easily reachable.

3 - Leave adequate spacing between elements. A website packed as a pack of sardines is confusing and not pretty.

2 - Keep your writing short and concise. You’re writing in a fast-paced medium where most people if they don’t find relevant information to their search within seconds, they leave. You’re writing on a website, not a novel.

1 - Less is more. If you think that an element is cluttering the page, then it probably is. Get rid of it or find another way to present it.

Finally, I’m gonna mention 2 indispensable tools for web designers. These are 2 addons for firefox that help you diagnose problems on the fly and correct them. Saves you a lot of time and will help you visualize errors.
